Samenvatting

In England, between the world wars, independent, progressive boarding schools promised to provide a new form of school educating individuals who would foment social & political changes. These claims are critically examined & a case study is made of Dartington Hall School & its former pupils. In particular, the gap between the ideal of individual freedom & institutional reality is examined. The radical progressive school is looked at in terms of expressive totality, charismatic leadership, pupil self-governance, the norms & values of pupil society, & boundary maintenance. Some of the conclusions derived concerning the functioning of such an "anti-school" are related to the contemporary free school movement. The ambivalences & dilemmas of the progressives' attempt to institutionalize freedom for the child are examined sociologically as are some of the consequences for former pupils. Modified HA.
