Samenvatting

Child centers are institutions in which children mostly less than four years old are received & provided for during the day. They are not part of the school system. The proportion of working mothers with young children has increased from about 7% to 19% between 1960 & 1970. During the same period there was a spectacular growth (from 100 to 2,000) of child centers. However, these are generally only open a few hours in the morning. Day care centers (open all day, enabling a mother to work full-time) have not grown in number at the same rate. Only 20% of the wroking mothers bring children to a day care center. Most mothers prefer to keep their child with relatives who will look after them; this is a carry-over from older patterns. More research is required to explain this situation. Such research is being carried out at the Krecheproject of the Sociological Instit of the U of Amsterdam. Modified HA.
