Samenvatting

Data from a 1973 survey on social inequality & psychological disturbances are examined for the workers' opinions on their personal position in Dutch society's stratification hierarchy. Respondents were 1,544 lower class & lower middle class residents of Rotterdam, 58% blue collar workers & 42% lower & middle level administrative employees. Workers appear less individualizing & more system-blaming than has been hypothesized. Expected workers blaming because of personal shortcomings is more widespread among white collar workers in the sample. Results are an indication of a prevailing ideology explaining & legitimizing inequality in terms of individual performance. A factor analysis indicates that the workers' views are differentiated. There appears to be no consistent workers' attitude in terms of individual or system-blaming for the workers' unequal personal position. 2 Tables. Modified HA.
