Samenvatting

Sociological knowledge of working class life styles in the Netherlands is limited compared to Great Britain. English literature on traditional working class life styles in local communities is summarized in an ideal-typical description. The link between neighbors, mother/daughter ties, husband/wife relationship, childrearing practices, recreational activities, & consumption patterns is seen as an interrelated aspect of working class subculture. The characteristics of this subculture are related to manual workers' position in the economic order. Research findings on Dutch working class communities are compared to the English data. Some differences & striking similarities are found which can be accounted for by the similar economic condition of manual workers in both countries. HA.
