Samenvatting

Social inequality due to labor market operation is traditionally interpreted in terms of the blue-collar/white-collar dichotomy. Over the past decade, lower white-collar workers have moved to a position closer to blue-collar workers than to upper white-collar workers. The dual labor market theory offers an alternative characterization of the basis of social inequality in the labor market. According to this theory, the labor market is being divided into two submarkets: a primary segment with stable companies that offer high wages, favorable working conditions, & secure employment; & a secondary segment with low-paid, unstable, & dead-end jobs with frequent layoffs & discharges. Women, minorities, & older people are often dependent on this secondary segment. Thus the individual's market position is determined not only by his/her internal market position but by the market position of the firm & industry in which he/she is employed. 2 Tables, 1 Figure.
