Samenvatting

Labor market segmentation reflects labor process divisions on the level of individual industries. Some industries rely almost entirely on the secondary labor market, others on the primary labor market. This segmentation of working conditions creates the objective basis for working class fragmentation. Such fragmentation occurs above all between women & men; foreign workers constitute a buffer with which the secondary labor market can be separated from the primary labor market, eliminating possible competition for jobs. An inferior labor reserve is created for the supply of secondary jobs. Firms use different methods according to whether they rely primarily on the primary or secondary labor market, & follow different manpower policies. Immigration policy consolidates & elaborates this system on the national level. 6 Tables, 1 Figure. Modified HA.
