Samenvatting

Following the lead of several other Western European countries, Belgium enacted a law in 1970 allowing traditional, academically oriented, high schools to introduce innovative educational programs. The major purpose of introducing educational innovations at the high school level is twofold: (1) to accelerate educational democratization, & (2) to stimulate study & school commitment among students. The effects of institutional innovations are examined by empirically evaluating a multivariate model consisting of individual, structural, & social-psychological determinants of educational goals in a sample of 1,399 high school seniors at 10 traditional & 7 innovative schools. Results indicate that socioeconomic status origins still exerts a strong influence on the curriculum position & the educational aspirations of students in both high school types. Chances of getting into an academic curriculum & of having high educational goals are about equal among males & females of the innovative schools. 3 Tables, 1 Figure. Modified HA.
