Samenvatting

Discussed are S. T. Coleridge's reactions, as a representative of the English Romantic movement, to England's transition from an agricultural society to an industrial nation state. The discussion focuses on the ideological confrontation of Romanticism with J. Bentham's utilitarianism which supported a harsh & unrelenting commercialism. Coleridge advocated increased government intervention in education & science. Several of Coleridge's ideas anticipated later reformism, eg, the Fabian society. Modified HA.
