Samenvatting

C. Jencks et al (Inequality, a Reassessment of the Effect of Family and Schooling in America, New York: Basic Books, 1972) developed a model for analyzing the relationships between socioeconomic background, intelligence, education, occupational status, & income. This research generated much controversy in the Netherlands. Jencks's conclusions were instrumental in discussions of proposed educational reforms by the Labor Minister of Education. I. Fagerlind (Formal Education and Adults Earnings, a Longitudinal Study on the Economic Benefits of Education, Stockholm Studies in Educational Psychology 21, Stockholm: Almquist & Wiksell, 1975) used Jencks's model for a secondary analysis of Swedish longitudinal data. Jencks's & Fagerlind's model is applied to available Dutch data to (1) demonstrate Jencks's method for Dutch society, (2) improve Jencks's model, (3) prevent incorrect generalizations of Jencks's results for the Netherlands, & (4) further Dutch sociological research on the relations between background, intelligence, education, & labor market. Results deviate from Jencks's results, showing that generalization to the Netherlands is incorrect. Present results can be cautiously applied in Dutch political discussions. The addition of selection & allocation variables in Jencks's model is advocated. 7 Tables. Modified HA.
