Samenvatting

In analyzing new Third World states, the concept of patron-client relationship has been used in two contexts: (1) to designate the relationship of production between the rural landowning elite & dependent peasants; & (2) to indicate broader relationships in society, especially those between the state & the peasants. Suggested is an analytical distinction between relationships rooted in the production & circulation sphere & those that arise from the state formation process, ie, higher-level integration. Based on research in Central Luzon (Philippines) & Java (Indonesia) it is argued that patron-client production relationships erode as agriculture is increasingly dominated by a centralized state apparatus. Although brokerage & intermediation continue to play a role, the links between the state apparatus & the local community cannot be envisaged in terms of a patron-client model. That concept is of limited value in analyzing contemporary developments in Southeast Asia. Modified HA.
