Samenvatting

Production internationalization, known as runaway industrialization, is geared to exploiting cheap labor. Changes in the situation of multinational corporations were a major factor in this new phase in the expansion of capitalism in the Third World. Moreover, several Third World nations have embarked on a strategy of export-led growth, attracting the runaway investments. In South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mexico, India, & Indonesia, export processing free zones have been installed as part of this strategy. An evaluation of the strategy in South Korea leads to somber conclusions in the realm of employment, work conditions, & development of other economic sectors. Other consequences have been an increase in the state's repressive tendencies, particulary toward labor, & a growing dependence of the South Korean economy on Japanese & United States interests. Analysis of the Korean experience leaves little hope that this strategy could make a positive contribution to Third World development. Modified HA.
