Two types of academic journals are contrasted: one passively accepts copy sent to it & merely separates printable from unprintable material; the other is programmatic &, through its editorial policies, takes an active leadership role in its field. The Sociologische Gids has always sought to be a programmatic journal, but this ambition has rarely been realized. It is claimed that this ambition is still worth pursuing today. A.O.
