Samenvatting

Influence is taken to mean the extent to which football clubs' problems have been solved by local government in the Netherlands. Data on the following were obtained: (1) club problems: problem number = latent anticipation; (2) whether influence attempts have been made with the local government: manifest anticipation = ratio between influence attempts & problem number; & (3) whether these attempts were successful: tested influence = ratio between successes & attempts. Four hypotheses based on principles from exchange theory were tested. Results indicate that: (A) football clubs in the highest league & football clubs with increasing achievements over the last 10 years have more tested influence than other clubs; (B) football clubs in big cities do not have more influence than clubs in small cities; & (C) the higher the general level of governmental support for a club, the higher the club's influence; this implies a cumulation of relative advantages. An important result is that the strength of an institutional relation between club & government has an important impact on the club's influence. 6 Tables, Appendixes. Modified HA.
