Samenvatting

Discussed is the major difference between the self-perception of sociology as a basic & central social science, & its peripheral position in the organization & execution of science policy in the Netherlands. The notion of sociology culled from various authors in several countries is considered in terms of the discipline's position in the broader field of the social sciences, the capacity for self- reflection as developed in the sociology of sociology, & the notion of sociology as composed of conflicting currents or ideologies. The peripheral position of sociology in the present state of Dutch scientific endeavors is described & explained, & Dutch sociologist are invited to clarify their positions & to take action they consider appropriate to the discipline's further development.
