Samenvatting

Summarized are the findings of a PO survey (number of cases = 1,460) on environmental pollution in the Netherlands. From value expectancy theory, mental incongruency theory, & collective good theory it was predicted that a high degree of environmental concern is not a sufficient condition for a high degree of environmentally conscious behavior. Results support this prediction. This might imply that traditional information campaigns, focusing on attitude change, are not very effective. Reward-oriented policy instruments might be more successful, especially in compensating the high individual cost of environmentally conscious behavior. 12 Tables. HA.
