Samenvatting

The evolution of the Chinese economic system is explained theoretically, in a non-Marxist way, using Bergsonian welfare theory & J. Tinberg's theory of the consistent regime. After a discussion of the Maoist attempt to create a new type of human being, the aims of Chinese economic policy are identified as the drive to achieve a rapid growth rate, a paternalistic preference for social goods, & a more or less egalitarian income distribution system. The actual pattern of Chinese economic decentralization & deconcentration can be explained by the Chinese decisionmakers' gradual acceptance of an economic system consistent with their own choices. This system is characterized by a pattern of centralization similar to the Western type, & by a degree of concentration lower than in any other economy comparable in size & living standard. 1 Table.
