In 1850 & 1860 the Netherlands ranked eighth among twelve northwestern European nations in transatlantic migration. The Dutch emigration pattern, reflecting the agrarian crisis of the 1840s, resembled that of Hanover & Westphalia, even though, as in Switzerland, the ecclesiastical situation played a more important part. Besides the motivating forces, conditions such as information, organization, public official reactions, & transportation are reviewed. HA.
