Samenvatting

Dispute settlements in Anufom society (North Togo) that do not come under the official jurisdiction of the Justice of the Peace are discussed. Reparation of relations between disputants, which is very important in Anufom society, is accomplished as follows: (1) the parties state their case in public, (2) the conduct of the disputants is weighed against the prevailing norms, (3) the disputants are forced to recognize their breach of the norms, & (4) relations are reestablished by paying mutual respect in a formal way. 2 Figures.
