Samenvatting

Research on verbal strategies used in job interviews is discussed. The gathering of material for such a study is shown to be not merely a problematic phase in the research process, but also immediately relevant to understanding the research site. The research itself is likely to be strategically embedded in the process of selection: the reactions of the applicants to the request of taping the interviews can be taken as demonstrations of their suitability for the job. Four aspects of interviews are noted: (1) interviews need to be improved, (2) participants want to keep them private, (3) there is a difference in strategic possibilities between applicant & selector, & (4) the urgent 'business-at-hand' nature of interviews does not lend itself to the presence of researchers. Modified HA.
