Samenvatting

Attempts by the new inhabitants of Eastern Flevoland, the Netherlands, (reclaimed land in the former Zuyderzee) to develop new types of social organizations are discussed. The central question is why some attempts have failed & others succeeded. The innovative tendencies of the organizations were in the form of 'depillarization'. Although the colonizing community has a greater chance of realizing its ideals than the old community, in this case it was held back by being a part of the Netherlands. Innovation was possible mainly in cases where ties with the national superstructure were weak or nonexistent. 5 Tables. Modified HA.
