An attempt is made to define the notion of disagreeable labor in subjective rather than objective terms. An answer can be sought in what motivates & fulfills workers as opposed to what does not. Based on the supposition that disagreeable jobs will be characterized by high absenteeism & large numbers of foreign laborers & employees from marginal groups, disagreeable work is considered to include jobs that: (1) are uninspiring, (2) require little education, or are monotonous & tedious, (3) offer no freedom of movement or communication, (4) are poorly paid without possibilities for advancement, (5) require unusual working hours, & (6) are performed under poor environmental conditions.
