Samenvatting

A sociological interpretation of requests made in the nineteenth century by members of patrician Amsterdam families (descendants of men called the 'Kings of the Republic') to be exalted into the ranks of the Dutch nobility. The reasons for this desire for ennoblement, which continued to manifest itself even after 1848, when the privileges belonging to the aristocratic class were abolished, are examined. It is shown that as bourgeois groups were gaining in political & economic strength, ennoblement was one of the means used by patrician families to restore their prestige as traditional rulers of the Low Countries, while at the same time serving to mark their still prominent position in the new Dutch state.
