Samenvatting

The Dutch squatters phenomenon is analyzed as a specific form of social agitation. Three theoretically distinct types of squatting are distinguished: self-help, symbolic action/protest, & institutional action/resistance. It is argued that the future of the movement depends on at least two crucial factors: the development of PO with regard to squatting, especially on the political Left, & the way in which the squatters movement will cope with the ambiguities inherent in every social movement.
