The use of physical force in tribal societies is examined. Violence is mostly an intratribal phenomenon, & rather than providing a means of total destruction, serves to create social order. The fragmentation of the means of violence, the small differences in physical force, & the constant shift of these differences entail a carefully calculated & restrained use of violence. Modified HA.
