The intellectual status of the distinction between "primitive" & "civilized" is evaluated. While the terminology has changed in recent decades, the basic conceptual dichotomy still exists. The meaning of civilized varies between different places or times, but the distinction of more or less civilized is universal. All cultural variants of the primitive-civilized dichotomy are phrased in the same basic idiom, which stresses the "animal" characteristics of human beings the need for control over bodily functions & organic processes.
