Samenvatting

The role of the tomb decorations of Renaissance painters in the professionalization & social advancement of artists is examined through historical evidence. In the 1330s, the most qualified painters were given funerals in socially important churches by their patrons. In the 1470s, the richest painters had funerary chapels like those of their patrons. In 1560s, the painters collectively founded a mausoleum to honor their most famous colleagues & the profession as a whole. These stages reflect changes in the relationship between painters & their patrons, who came increasingly to depend on the services of this emerging professional group. Modified HA.
