Samenvatting

Not only the production of plastic art, but the professional role of plastic artists & the quality of their work, are influenced by reliance on public financing. Examination of cases in the domain of environmental design illustrates this influence. Three specific cases are reviewed: the response of Charles Karsten to assignments given him in the 1960s by the Dutch government; the proposals of the Liga Nieuw Beelden, an association of artists & architects, for new policy regarding the plastic arts, advanced in 1962; & the commissioning of a Shakespeare monument by the State Board of Advice for the Monumental Arts in 1964-1971. These examples display the important role of the Dutch welfare state in the development of the arts since 1945. Modified HA.
