Samenvatting

In 1970, the Ministry of Culture in the Netherlands instituted a large-scale project to investigate the possibility of bridging the "gap between modern art & society." One subproject was carried out in Paradiso, a once-famous center of the counterculture in Amsterdam. A number of well-known artists were to give parties in an environment of their own creation. The public attending the first two parties responded to the environments as decoration rather than art, while the later three artists succeeded by keeping art in a subordinate position. These cases suggest that the autonomous position of art in contemporary society is too entrenched to be changed quickly. Modified HA.
