Underlying causes of the summer 1981 riots in GB are analyzed, specifically why they occurred on such scale only at that time, & why they took their particular form. The significance of the riots is discussed in social & political terms, identifying their SE background, & examining the riot as a form of popular protest in British history & the role played by young blacks in its reintroduction. The relevance of "reformism" in the context of economic recession, & the relevance of the British experience for Dutch society are also discussed. 1 Table. Modified HA.
