Samenvatting

The recent emergence of the concept of a new Mc or new petite bourgeoisie in Marxist sociology is examined. Two primary modes of defining this class in the extant literature are identified: (1) its function in the social DofL, including coordination & control of production, reproduction, & ideological legitimation; & (2) its relation to the means of production, in terms of relative autonomy, power without property, & appropriation of surplus value. The neglect of the political & ideological position of this class in such studies is noted. The theories of G. Carchedi, J. K. Lindsey, J. & Barbara Ehrenreich, Nicos Poulantzas, J. Urry, A. Skotnes, & C. Baudelot et al are briefly summarized. Modified HA.
