Samenvatting

The history & impact of the Instit voor Sociaal Onderzoek van het Nederlandse Volk ([ISONEVO], Social Research Instit of the Netherlands) from 1940 to 1960 is analyzed. ISONEVO's status as one of the first basic/applied social research facilities in the Netherlands is reviewed, noting the prestige of several of its founding members; its early "straddling" of social research/policy implementation functions is examined in a review of the topical conferences sponsored (eg, on population growth in the Netherlands) & training workshops. The dependence of ISONEVO on clients & private sponsorship, & its ultimate failure to obtain government sponsorship are identified as crucial factors in its financial collapse & closing in 1960. The postwar prevalence of "pillarized" financing in the Netherlands is also discussed, noting the difficulties created for ISONEVO by postwar religious-sponsored social research groups. Modified HA.
