Samenvatting

The isolation of research traditions in empirical sociology is discussed as an impediment to genuine scientific progress. An overview of the primary currents, & their methodological & theoretical backgrounds, is presented, with particular attention to a group of contemporary Dutch sociologists combining individualist theory with a critical-rationalist methodology. It is recommended that the various research traditions be employed by empiricists as heuristic devices, aiming at descriptions fulfilling both theoretical orientations & external validity.
