The classical tradition of class analysis, exemplified by such writers as Adam Smith, Adam Ferguson, Karl Marx, & Max Weber, is reviewed. This tradition offers macrosocial analyses of inequality, which start from economic oppositions of interest & interpret political & ideological phenomena as economically based. The works of contemporary researchers in neo-Weberian & neo-Marxist traditions are also reviewed, including Anthony Giddens (The Class Structure of the Advanced Societies, London, 1973) & Rosemary Crompton & Jon Gubbay (Economy and Class Structure, London & Basingstoke, 1977).
