Samenvatting

From 1950 to 1977, the total N of Dutch retail outlets decreased from 195,156 to 137,938; meanwhile the % of retailers with 50+ employees almost doubled, from 13% to 25%. Reasons for this shift included the integration of smaller businesses into larger ones, the failure of many small firms, closure of small businesses due to Ur renovation, increase in interest rates, & less government concern in helping small business. Starting in 1978, however, the number of small businesses began to increase due to the inability of larger firms to absorb new employees during a recession, realization of the relative ease with which small businesses can adapt to innovation, desire for higher quality production, & efforts by many immigrant families to start their own businesses. An examination of "alternative" businesses in the Netherlands, based on written & oral interviews of employees (total N = 946) of firms making special efforts to harmonize their interpersonal or environmental relationships, showed that most Rs felt the companies were meeting their special goals satisfactorily. 8 Figures.
