Samenvatting

A study of new small businesses established in Amsterdam by immigrants to the Netherlands from Surinam, Turkey, & other countries. In addition to the usual features of family businesses, these enterprises are characterized by ethnic specialization & loyalty. Their desire to start their own businesses stems from: (1) the market created by the ethnic community for special products, eg, ethnic foods; (2) a reaction to unemployment & racial discrimination in the larger society; & (3) the tendency of people with strong entrepreneurial tendencies to emigrate to a new country where they can fulfill their ambitions. 19 References.
