Samenvatting

As a case study of the influence of social philosophy on emancipatory movements, the political & social doctrine of the Polish independent trade union Solidarnosc in 1980/81 is examined. Based on the experience of more than 30 years of a Communist system, an original vision of state & society was created, encompassing ideas of self-government, participation, & self-management. This is closely related to historical ideas of social anarchism. Although this doctrinal origin was not directly recognized by Solidarnosc, there is a definite structural similarity between its vision of a "self-governing commonwealth" & the doctrine of antistate collectivism.
