The impact of Chinese immigration to the US prior to the Civil War on US history & belief systems is explored. A pattern of Wc anti-immigration sentiment & activism is described. The vocabulary of indictment & rejection, fusing economic & racial arguments, that accompanied these feelings is discussed & seen to have been later transferred to other immigrant groups occupying the same role. This pattern was an important element in the fusion of nativism, progressivism, Wc conservatism, & populist radicalism in the US. Modified HA.
