Samenvatting

It is generally believed that the Amsterdam school of sociography was rather provincial in its orientation, & that, while it created a tradition of empirical research in Dutch sociology, it made no contribution to theoretical knowledge. However, the sociographers were aware of what was going on in sociology elsewhere, & although their explicit intention to formulate theories based on community studies was not fulfilled, they made valuable research contributions to the theoretical traditions of evolutionism & revisionist socialism. Over time the implicit theoretical core faded away, & sociography became institutionalized as an applied science whose research problems no longer were unified by a theoretical perspective.
