Samenvatting

A series of responses to J. Goudsblom's "De civilisatietheorie in het geding" (Civilization Theory at Stake [see abstract in this section]). In Wat is beschaafd? (What Is Civilized?), Anton Blok argues that Goudsblom bases his argumentation about the nature of violence within civilized societies solely on the basis of European, specifically Dutch, history. In Nogmaals over geweld in tribale samenlevingen (Once Again a Discussion of Violence in Tribal Communities), Rene Jagers remarks that Goudsblom ignores the existence of violence in all societies. In Elias en de Aukaners (Elias and the Aukaners), H. U. E. Thoden van Velzen supports the validity of Norbert Elias's study, criticized by Goudsblom, on the degree of violent & civilized traits found in the primitive societies of the Aukaner tribesmen in Surinam. In Monniken, ridders en het 'civilisatieproces' (Monks, Knights, and the Civilization Process), Mayke de Jong supports Elias's analysis of the civilization process in medieval Europe, as reconstructed from military records & popular culture. In Aanvalsdrift en civilisatie (Aggressiveness and Civilization), Benjo Maso gives further support to Elias's methodology, criticized by Goudsblom. In Naschrift (Reply), J. Goudsblom offers slight revisions of his thesis & clarifies his original intent. 17 References. M. Meeks.
