Samenvatting

The generally accepted idea that deconfessionalization is taking place among Catholics & Protestants in the Netherlands today -- ie, that there is a dramatic & irreversible erosion of the sociologically & politically relevant dimensions of religion -- is challenged. The weakness of the deconfessionalization theory is its unsophisticated conceptual framework. An empirical assessment of deconfessionalization phenomena is presented. A typology of religious background is devised that distinguishes between secular & secularized & between orthodox & nonorthodox religiousness. This typology is used to screen PO & attitude data collected in a 1980 survey of cultural change in the Netherlands (N not given). This approach reveals elements indicating that there is still a definite correlation between differences in religious background & separate "worlds" or subcultures, each with its own distinct pattern of beliefs, ideals, & ethics, as well as specific variants of lifestyle & of the social construction of reality. 4 Tables, 11 References.
