Samenvatting

The term "vicious circle" has often been employed to describe the bureaucracy of organizations or action structures in general. A systematic analysis is attempted, using basic ideas from cybernetics to investigate vicious circles. Discussed are the origin of vicious circles in organizations, their relation to perceptional biases, their dynamic properties, & their tendency to appear in clusters. Following a review of how vicious circles are treated in the literature, suggestions for new research are offered. 4 Figures, 79 References. Modified HA.
