Samenvatting

The Chinese immigrant community in the Netherlands numbers between 35,000 & 50,000 people, if added to those who came directly from China are those who entered indirectly via Indonesia, Malaysia, Surinam, & Vietnam. Traditionally, the Chinese immigrants have opened restaurants & catering businesses. Data from a 1981/82 interview survey of restaurant owners & workers (N not given) show that a crisis has developed within the Chinese community. The cost of establishing a new restaurant has risen sharply, to about 100,000 guilder, a sum that few immigrants can muster; thus new arrivals must take low-paying jobs in the restaurants. The traditional mechanism by which immigrants have achieved an acceptable living standard is no longer available. 20 References. Modified HA.
