Samenvatting

In Les Origines magiques de la royaute ([The Magical Origins of Royalty], Paris, 1920), J. G. Frazer presented important insights into the African concept of divine kingship, later misrepresented by the functional criticisms of Anglo-Saxon anthropologists. The term "sacred king" or "chief" is probably more accurate. This ritual institution is viewed as a breach in the traditional domestic mode of economic production & as such represents an ideological revolution against the longstanding cultural stipulation that all members of the tribe must share in work. However, the emergence of the institution of sacred kingship did not necessarily mark the beginning of the African state. 19 References. Modified HA.
