Samenvatting

Tunisian society has undergone considerable change since the creation of an independent republic in 1956. Increasing secularization & the introduction of socialism have done much to change the role of women in Islamic society. An interview with an 18-year-old woman, participating in a fundamentalist Islamic women's group, shows how conservative Muslim women view the transformation of Tunisian society. These women, who meet every Sunday in the town of Jendouba to discuss women's issues in an Islamic context, think that women's inferior position is due to a falling away from the social norms prescribed by the Koran. Accordingly, they try to improve their social position by adhering more closely to traditional Islamic values & customs. 9 References. Modified HA.
