Samenvatting

A critique of a series of articles entitled "Civilization and Violence," written by Anton Blok, Rene Jagers, H. U. E. Thoden van Velzen, Mayke de Jong, & Benjo Maso, in which certain aspects of Norbert Elias's theory of civilizing processes (Het civilisatieproces [The Process of Civilization] Utrecht: Het Spectrum, 1976) were criticized. Most of these authors' major criticisms are seen to rest on the failure to recognize that Elias's theory is a developmental one & not a static typology of civilized vs noncivilized societies. Some recurrent issues in the discussion of Elias's theory are clarified, eg, the role of the Christian church in the civilizing process in Europe, the nature of developmental theories, & problems of ethnocentrism & value judgments in sociology & anthropology. 14 References.
