Samenvatting

A study of PO in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on squatters' rights & the radical squatters' movement before & after the housing shortage riots of 11 Oct 1982. PO on the squatters was surprisingly indifferent. In an Apr 1982 questionnaire survey (N = 109 Rs, aged 15+, 75% contacted by telephone), 56% of the Rs neither approved nor disapproved of squatting. A simultaneous survey of squatters (N = 199 Rs, 60% of whom were aged 21-25) showed little interest in the radical movement. A new telephone survey conducted 13-20 Oct 1982 (N = 179 Rs, aged 15+) showed that even in the days immediately following the riots, 43% of the Rs had no opinion on squatters' rights. In general, those who have an opinion approve the squatters occupation of empty buildings; both the general public & most squatters do not agree with the violent tactics used by the radical squatters' movement. 2 Tables. Modified HA.
