Samenvatting

The social costs of unemployment are investigated, specifically, the relationship between the economic situation & the rise & fall in number of deaths. Based on the research approach of M. H. Brenner in the US, unemployment figures & death statistics in the Netherlands since WWII are analyzed. Brenner's hypothesis that a rise in unemployment leads, at the macrosociological level, to a rise in the number of deaths is not confirmed for the Dutch situation. The use of macrosocial analysis as the method for testing this relationship is criticized, & suggestions are made for research on the consequences of unemployment for individuals at the microsocial level. 7 Figures, 2 Appendixes, 53 References. Modified HA.
