A discussion of the differences between unemployment, viewed as an economic-administrative problem, & the fact of being unemployed, as an individual & societal experience. The former concept is currently predominant: its consequences for the formulation of sociological research questions are explored. A review of the literature reveals wide differences in the definition of who is unemployed, in the meaning of unemployment as either an economic or societal phenomenon, & in the meaning of being unemployed as a life event. 31 References.
