Samenvatting

Described is the continuing allegiance among migrant Creole-Surinamese Fs in the Netherlands to traditional views on homosexuality, despite the many contacts that have been established between modern feminist groups & Creole-Surinamese women's organizations. Not only the mati, ie, F friends who stick to patterns of behavior characteristic of their past & the mother country, but younger Fs moving ahead in the host society prefer not to be classed as lesbians. It is argued that this represents an attempt to keep the ranks closed among the F members of an ethnic group. A majority of Creole women appear to expect greater social gains from filling traditional roles & abiding by shared views fostering ethnic unity than from the individual freedoms promised by feminism & lesbianism. 28 References.
