Samenvatting

The development from psychopathia sexualis to sexology in the Netherlands during the late nineteenth & early twentieth centuries is described. It is argued that sexology shaped a new concept & practice of sexuality, which continue to inform contemporary sociological views. In particular, Albert Moll's dichotomy of sexual outlets & sexual relations (Untersuchungen uber die Libido sexualis [Treatise on the Sexual Libido], Berlin, 1897) has long dominated the definition of sexuality in the social sciences; it determined the biological & psychological biases of sexology that inhibited a sociological analysis of sexuality. It is argued that a sociology of sex is possible only from the perspective that sexuality is a social construction that interferes with biological processes. 75 References. Modified HA
